Taking Your Dog Fleas on Vacation

It's that time of year when a lot of people are going on vacation. It's important to make sure that you take care of your dog's flea treatments before you leave. Otherwise while you are gone, thousands of flea eggs that are currently in your carpet and on your furniture may hatch. If this happens fleas will be starving for someone to jump on when you arrive back home.

Many people use a spot on treatment or oral medication to help control their dog's fleas. Both of these methods can be very effective. They can typically be purchased online, at a pet store, or through your veterinarian's office. I have used both of these treatments over time with varying degrees of success.

Some people will choose to use a dog flea shampoo to get rid of fleas. Flea shampoos are pretty popular since people have to wash their dogs anyway. They are typically less expensive than a spot on or oral treatment. Most shampoos are made from pyrethrins, an insecticidal chemical that comes from Chrysanthemums. This insecticide can be used to stop fleas but it has limited effectiveness. This is because pyrethrins are slow acting and fleas can sometimes develop resistance to them. It is important after using a flea shampoo to make sure you rinse your dog well.

Fleas will lay eggs not only on your dog but also in carpets, furniture and bedding. It's important to make sure you get rid of those fleas as well. Your pet's bedding should be treated with an insecticide. A good flea bomb can also be an effective method of removing the fleas from your house. If used properly a flea bomb can help break the fleas' reproduction cycle and can keep them from reproducing for up to 180 days.

Conclusion

It's important to make sure you take care of all the different places dog fleas can live before leaving to go on your vacation. Otherwise your wonderful vacation may end with returning to a dog flea infestation. The good news is that it's not very expensive to keep this from happening; it just requires some diligence on your part.
